HOW DOES A DRIVEWAY HEATING SYSTEM WORK?

Just the thought of snow and ice build-up on the driveway is enough to cause irritation. When this thought becomes a reality, the pain of having to clear out the driveway is a nightmare come true. Shovelling and using the salt are the two of the most classic ways of clearing snow build up. However, sometimes the snow can turn into ice very quickly and get mixed up with the salt. This combination of snow, ice and salt can be very hard to remove, so much that even snow blowers might not be enough to remove it. The best way to address this problem of snow buildup during winters is by installing Driveway Heating Systems. It is the most efficient and cost-effective way to get rid of the snow buildup. The system works up melting the snow as soon as it hits the surface. Here is all that you need to know about this revolutionary way to have a cleared driveway during winters.

 Functioning of the System

The driveway heating system works by heating the concrete floor from underneath as it uses a radiant floor heating system. Water-heated pipes or electric heating coils are installed underneath the flooring. The heat produced by this system is transferred to the floor heats up everything that touches the ground. As the floor heats up the heat also rises along with it which helps to melt out the snow even before it hits the surface of the driveway. However, for the system to be highly efficient and cost-effective, the flooring should be a good conductor of heat. This system uses very little energy. It makes use of an automated system that turns on whenever it senses moisture.

 Installation of the system

When you are planning to construct an asphalt driveway, then it requires multiple players. Excavation is carried out to ensure that the ground is compact. The layer of the compacted gravel should be between the depths of 4” to 8”. Once that has been done, a junction box is added to work as an intermediary between the melting panel and the heating system. Following this, a base coat layer of asphalt is created which is between the depths of 1.5 inches to 2 inches. Then the heating mats are laid down. At each step, the ohmmeter is used to check the functionality of the heating system. In the end, the asphalt is spread over the mats which create 2 to 3 inches of a deep layer which helps to avoid the mechanized asphalt pavers.

While the installation is being done, the junction box, temperature sensors and the controls for the system need to be installed with utmost care. It is always best to hire professionals to carry out the job of installation. It is best to install the heating system when you are building a new home. However, it can also be installed in an already existing property. Hiring professionals to do the same will help ensure proper installation.
